About Us
About the Name:
What is a LAN? Although LAN stands for 'Local Area Network', that is only the beginning. A LAN event is comprised of a group of people that gather together in a central location, connect their computers together, and game as hard as they can!
Where does the 'Urban' part of it come from? - The short answer... Urban Culture.
Urbanculture.co.nz was a forum aimed at including all age groups in general discussion topics. The staff that ran the forum began toying with the idea to get out there and try something new. Thus, UrbanLAN was born with its first event in July 2006 entitled 'UrbanLAN Launch'. UrbanLAN Launch had an approximate tally of 35-40 people attending. After a successful event the crew took a small break, all the while trying to locate new premises to host another LAN. Eventually they made contact with Wintec School of IT in late 2006. After discussions together, a strong relationship was formed between UrbanLAN and Wintec School of IT. This relationship has meant that UrbanLAN has been allowed to operate on Wintec's premise to this very day.
About the Event:
We at UrbanLAN try to run at least three events per year, usually around January/February, June/July and September/October. Sometimes those dates fluctuate depending on Wintec's term breaks. We used to run events between October/November but this was pushed back to September/October so as not to interfere with high school exams
We offer the opportunity to game hard over a 24 hour period while still being sociable... You may think that geeks are not sociable, but frankly they are, you just have to talk to them about the right things... Like the latest technology or just how n00b someone is.
We meet together to play games, blow up pixels, have fun, drink lots of energy drinks, and eat lollies to keep us awake in the wee small hours of the morning. We also have home cooked meals while we are here.
The thing that really makes us stand out from the rest? - We tend to embrace our social side with a number of social activities... e.g. spotlight, soccer and other social games.

Just remember... shooting someone else's head off in a computer game doesn't mean you don't like them, it just means you're better than them :D
